This was a traditional design project. How could this project have been green?

The last two years have exploded with amazing green, non-toxic, sustainable products that are available to the public, affordable and accessible.

Today we would use non-toxic strippers (Franmar Paint strippers) to remove the polyurethane stain on the oak moulding and fireplace casegoods. All coatings and stains would be non-toxic. Very few mainstream stores carry non-toxic paint, all contain low VOCs (note: the darker the paint the more the VOCs in commercial paints.)  Reclaimed woods replace all oak mouldings and case goods. Available at Living Green in Culver City, CA.

Upscale fabric vendors, like Kravet.com, just started carrying recycled and recyclable fabrics. You know its eco-friendly if it can be recycled. Note that if something is recycled, it doesn’t mean its non-toxic, you must verify what the recycled materials are that it is made from.

Wood floors are also more accessible today. This project required a specific color, and budget. There are reclaiming companies claiming wood floors from around the world, these are actually floors saved from demolished buildings. Since many endangered woods are no longer available or hard to find, this is one way to do it. (Look for the FSC seal –Forest Stewardship Council-they help promote good forest management practices. www.fsc.org)
